In some important industrial sectors, CO₂ emissions are difficult to avoid due to the processes involved. Targeted solutions are required to preserve them in Bavaria and still achieve the climate policy targets. This is where carbon management comes in, with strategies for reducing, capturing, transporting, using and storing CO₂.
In order to create the basis for broad industrial and economically viable measures in Bavaria, the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy has developed the CCU/CCS action plan for carbon management in Bavaria in Bavaria. The aim is to promote carbon management solutions and prepare transformation paths. In order to accompany this process, the Carbon Management Coordination Office, which is based at Bayern Innovativ, supports the implementation of the action plan on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs by pooling knowledge, networking stakeholders and promoting companies and applicants.
All measures to capture, reduce, use and store carbon dioxide emissions with the aim of sustainably reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving climate neutrality in the long term are important. This includes strengthening natural carbon sinks and technological, organizational and strategic approaches to process optimization as well as technical carbon management methods such as carbon capture, utilization (CCU) and storage (CCS).
Carbon management plays a central role, particularly in sectors with emissions that are difficult to avoid, and combines technological innovations with climate protection strategies. It is essential for the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
CO₂ utilization (CCU) describes the capture of carbon dioxide with subsequent use, for example as a raw material for chemical products, synthetic fuels or building materials. CO₂ storage (CCS) refers to the capture of CO₂ from industrial processes and its permanent storage. Both technologies particularly address process-related emissions that are difficult or impossible to avoid.
The effective reduction of CO₂ emissions is the main goal of Bavaria's climate policy. In order to achieve this goal, the switch to renewable and CO₂-neutral energy sources must be as complete as possible. Nevertheless, process-related and therefore difficult or unavoidable emissions will remain in certain branches of industry in the long term. At the same time, natural carbon sinks must therefore be strengthened, for example through the renaturation of moors. The capacities of natural sinks are unlikely to be sufficient to fully compensate for this. This also requires the use of technical carbon capture and storage measures and the targeted removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
The CCU/CCS action plan for carbon management in Bavaria creates a strategic framework for this and aims to combine planning security, competitiveness and innovation.
