Despite declines in almost all business areas, the Executive Board of Nuremberg-based regional utility N-Energie is satisfied with the 2025 financial year. The company continues to invest.
Nuremberg-based energy company N-Ergie was unable to repeat the results of 2024. Falling prices in a normalizing market had depressed sales and profits, said CEO Maik Render at the presentation of the figures on 21 April.
Nevertheless, the municipally owned company - a good 60 percent is held by Städtische Werke Nürnberg, the rest by the municipal utility cooperation Thüga - is "very satisfied" with the year 2025, according to Render, with a profit of 161 million euros (2024: 180 million euros) and a turnover of 4.2 billion euros (5 billion euros). Thüga will receive a good 25 million euros in accordance with the contract, Städtische Werke a good 74 million euros.
According to Render, N-Ergie will retain 55 million euros to strengthen its equity base and for upcoming investments in the company. And the Franconians are in the middle of a transformation process. Flexibilization projects are pending in the main business area of electricity. These range from the digitalization of grids to offers for smart homes, with connected smart meters, wallboxes, solar systems and storage facilities.
Bavaria's largest grid-serving storage system in sight
N-Ergie plans to break ground on the largest grid-serving storage facility in Bavaria to date in 2026, probably in the summer, according to Magdalena Weigel, Head of Human Resources and IT. The large-scale battery storage facility with 20 MW of storage and withdrawal capacity and a total capacity of 100,000 kWh is being built in the Ansbach district of Winterschneidbach near the local substation. In March 2026, the specialist company Maxsolar from Traunstein was awarded the contract by N-Ergie to build the storage facility (we reported).
Expenditure on the electricity grid includes new substations, some of which have been built and some of which are in the planning stage. N-Ergie has agreed four new grid interconnection points in the grid area with the transmission system operator Tennet. Electricity will remain the most lucrative business in 2025 with sales of EUR 2.76 billion (2024: EUR 3.48 billion). Nationwide sales to major customers also contribute to this. Maik Render still sees N-Ergie as one of the four largest suppliers in Germany.
Prices remain stable for the time being
Natural gas remains in second place in the business segments. Here, N-Ergie achieved sales of 940 million euros and was thus below the billion euro mark with a decline of around 130 million euros. Like all fossil fuels, this energy source is not all fun and games. Replacing it remains a challenge. N-Ergie therefore wants to convert the growing district heating, for example, and is planning to integrate heat and waste heat from a sewage treatment plant, waste wood, geothermal energy and innovative combined heat and power (CHP).
According to Magdalena Weigel, prices for energy customers will remain stable for the time being. Whether this can be maintained also depends on the duration of the war between the USA and Israel against Iran. A gradual replacement of gas with green hydrogen is out of the question for the time being. According to Maik Render, neither public start-up funding for a desired electrolyzer nor a marketable price for green gas are in sight.
