Energie Burghausen Begins Implementation of Geothermal Project
A new district heating pipeline is set to supply the city with geothermal heat from Halsbach starting in 2028 and connect to existing heating networks.

Burghausen is to be connected to the Halsbach geothermal system in cooperation with Naturwärme Kirchweidach-Halsbach.
Following a resolution by the supervisory board and the shareholders’ meeting of Energie Burghausen GmbH (EBG), implementation of a geothermal project for municipal heat supply is set to begin. In the future, the Bavarian city is to be connected to the geothermal plant operated by Naturwärme Kirchweidach-Halsbach GmbH & Co. KG via a transmission line approximately ten kilometers long.
After four years of intensive planning and a successful marketing phase, the project is now moving into the next phase. As things stand, the first phase of expansion is scheduled to go into operation in 2028. Implementation is still contingent on approval of the requested federal funding and the successful conclusion of financing negotiations.
“We are creating a heat supply system that combines climate protection, security of supply, and comfort. In doing so, we are investing in infrastructure that will benefit the people of Burghausen for many decades to come,” said EBG Managing Director Tanja Erb.
Existing heating networks will be integrated
The heat is generated at the geothermal plant in Halsbach and will be transported to Burghausen via the new transmission line. The connection point to the municipal heating network is planned for the Bergham district. There, EBG is constructing an energy center, from which a main pipeline will run toward Robert-Koch-Straße. Based on this, the heating network is to be expanded in several construction phases.
In the first phase of expansion, EBG will integrate two existing heating networks into the new system. These networks will also be supplied with geothermal energy in the future. Where possible, the company also plans to connect public buildings to the network. The transmission line is scheduled to be completed as early as 2027 and begin supplying the first customers. To ensure the project’s economic viability, the company is counting on a high connection rate in the designated service areas.
