"Interieur im Automobil x InSuM" conference - Shaping the future despite the industry crisis

Falling demand for e-mobility, forced production relocations, plant closures: The pressure on the automotive industry is higher than ever. At the same time, the demand for rapid adjustments and innovative solutions is growing in order to remain competitive in the long term.

Especially in these challenging times, the focus on future-oriented developments is crucial. The vehicle interior in particular is increasingly becoming a differentiating factor - it stands for comfort, design and digitalization and shapes the driving experience of the future. Innovations in materials, technologies and sustainable concepts can provide new impetus and open up market potential. But which trends, technologies and markets do we need to understand today in order to be successful tomorrow? Which requirements of different markets need to be taken into account in order to ensure long-term competitiveness?

Our specialist conference "Interieur im Automobil x InSuM" on May 13 & 14, 2025 at the Audi Sportpark Ingolstadt is dedicated to precisely these questions. Sustainability is particularly important for future generations of vehicles. Renewable materials such as wood and cork can make a significant contribution to reducing the CO2 footprint. These are new to the automotive industry and are being investigated as part of research projects with regard to possible applications in the interior.
The presentation will begin with an overview of the BMW Group's sustainability goals and measures as well as the basic principles of design-for-circularity. A cockpit and seat will also be used to show how new materials (wood, cork) can be used and what findings are already available from research projects.

Immersive Interior Lighting

How light art turns the car into an emotional space
This keynote lecture conveys a completely new understanding of light. It looks at the way famous lighting artists think and work, transfers their lighting effects to the automotive interior and presents color-psychological and technological methods. After this lecture, you will see light with different eyes.

Rethink light. Create well-being.
The automotive industry has begun a fundamental change of perspective and is asking: How can we think about the design of a vehicle from the point of view of the driver's well-being? Light is the new answer. Light that doesn't just fulfill its usual function. Light that creates an immersive experience and plays a key role in ensuring the emotional well-being of the driver and passengers. If you are prepared to learn from lighting artists, you can completely redefine and use light.

The automotive industry is undergoing a transformation and vehicles are evolving into immersive third spaces. As part of their digital lifestyle, drivers and passengers expect an in-car entertainment experience that matches the one they enjoy at home or on the road. And because cars offer a purpose-built environment, it is possible to create a personalized interior experience that goes beyond what is possible elsewhere. This presentation will provide an overview of existing and emerging use cases and content formats that go beyond music and movies. In addition, critical success factors for broad consumer adoption will be highlighted and we will share some thoughts on potential business opportunities.

Get-Together

Important insights into the interior of the future

Around 180 participants gathered at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on March 20, 2024.

The aim of the event was to bring together all disciplines of automotive interiors in Ingolstadt to discuss trends and new concepts for the interior of the future.

This year's event focused on the digital in-car experience, sustainability with a focus on interior concepts and materials and the topic of user experience.

Tim Kastenhuber: "In our view, the topic of user experience is the link between all specialist areas of interior design."

Experts from industry and business gave inspiring insights into innovations, trends and technologies from their field and provided interesting impulses. We have summarized the most important insights:

The customer is king - Understand the customer's needs!

Customer needs have changed and are very differentiated. Connected services are now an essential part of the purchasing decision (China 55% | Germany 39% | USA 38%)

At the same time, user data is an important building block for understanding customer needs and providing the user with a perfect user experience.

Build partnerships - learn from other sectors!

The challenges facing the automotive industry are huge and diverse. The order of the day is to form partnerships. The entertainment industry, for example, offers enormous potential for cooperation with the automotive industry and plays an essential role in the vehicles of the future.

Digital technologies are unstoppable - use them!

For a positive user experience, not only the interior design of the car and materials are crucial, but also digital services, displays and smart HMI technologies that enable individuality and interaction with the vehicle.

On the road to greater sustainability - create innovations with sustainable added value!

Vehicle interiors have already undergone a major transformation in the last decade, which was mainly characterized by lightweight and transparent materials and HMI functions. In the future, the focus will be even more on sustainable materials. Solutions are already available; an important task for the success of sustainable materials is to create acceptance for possible aesthetic imperfections of alternative materials.

Hardware follows software - keep an eye on the future!

Software Updates Over the Air (SOTA) make ever shorter innovation cycles possible. In future, the task of designers and suppliers in the hardware sector will be to look as far into the future as possible and equip vehicle hardware for all future possibilities in order to enable these new functions through updates.

Sustainability, functionality, design - actively shape the automotive transformation according to these criteria and understand modularity as a design principle for more sustainable interiors!

The requirements for the interior of the future will change. Innovations and technologies that combine the desire for sustainability, functionality and design promise great potential.

A modular design of the interior hardware offers the possibility of adapting the interior to the changing needs of the user over time.

This slows down the obsolescence of the hardware and increases its useful life.

The desire for individuality increases - develop your personality!

The focus is on the user and their preferences. The vehicle as a 3rd living space must reflect their emotions and lifestyle with individual features.

Disruptive technologies are conquering the market - be prepared!

The market is subject to constant change and is strongly influenced by changes in regulations, technologies and consumer behavior. In addition, there are challenges from new products, competitors, OEMs and shorter innovation cycles.

The responsibility lies with us - you too can contribute to greater sustainability!

The automotive industry has understood its part in the shift towards sustainable mobility. Digital services provide incentives to break with habitual behavior and promote sustainable, responsible mobility behavior, even during the vehicle's usage phase. In this way, they contribute to a more liveable city of the future.
