Coordination center for additive manufacturing: Expanding technology leadership

Additive manufacturing in Bavaria

Bavaria is already a leading location in the field of additive manufacturing. The "Coordination Office for Additive Manufacturing" links many activities related to this future topic and serves as a central point of contact for experts and newcomers to 3D printing.

Additive manufacturing processes convert digital data into material products. In contrast to conventional processes, production takes place layer by layer, which enables highly complex geometries. If additive manufacturing develops its full potential, it will fundamentally change the world of industrial production. However, there are still many challenges to be solved - especially with regard to the industrialization of the processes.

Bavaria has developed into a leading location in the field of additive manufacturing in recent years. There is a distinctive ecosystem that includes successful companies along the entire value chain as well as scientific institutes. Bayern Innovativ has been intensively involved with additive manufacturing for years. For example, this technology is one of the focal points of the New Materials cluster.

The "Coordination Office for Additive Manufacturing", which is based at Bayern Innovativ, acts as a hub for all key players and newcomers to 3D printing and links activities related to this future-oriented topic. The aim is to expand Bavaria's technological leadership. The coordination center aims to enable SMEs in particular to enter the world of additive manufacturing.

Focus of the Additive Manufacturing Coordination Center

  • Networking and exchange with players along the value chain
  • Access to knowledge about technologies, processes and materials
  • Central point of contact for 3D printing activities
  • Information on funding for collaborative projects
  • Finding project partners and initiating projects
  • Entry into additive manufacturing
  • Increasing the visibility of Bavaria's expertise

Current challenges in additive manufacturing

In order to open up new applications for additive manufacturing, it is necessary to broaden the previously limited range of materials and to optimize the materials for processes and applications. There is also a need to increase the process capability, reliability and cost-effectiveness of the processes and, last but not least, to initiate completely new "additive approaches". The Additive Manufacturing Coordination Center aims to be Bavaria's central hub for all relevant industries and players along the value chain.

Future initiative 3D printing

Promoting research and development, networking and knowledge exchange is an important step in ensuring that additive manufacturing makes the leap into industrial production. With the BAYERN DIGITAL II master plan, the Bavarian state government has created a comprehensive digitalization programme. As part of the 3D printing initiative for the future, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs provides targeted funding for collaborative and cooperative projects for research and development work in the field of industrial additive manufacturing. Together with a panel of experts, the Additive Manufacturing Coordination Office determines the thematic focus of the calls for funding for research and development projects in the areas of materials, technologies and processes.

Together we promote the use of additive manufacturing!

The Additive Manufacturing Coordination Office demonstrates the capabilities of the technology in a customer-oriented and application-oriented manner. It contributes to the exchange of knowledge through innovative, goal-oriented formats, supports companies and research institutions in finding the right partners and creates transparency and visibility for Bavarian players in this field. The coordination office is the central point of contact for knowledge and technology transfer in Bavaria and stands for a holistic approach to additive manufacturing. The aim is to promote the use of the technology and its industrialization.
