Over two million charging processes for the first time
10.12.2024
In the past quarter, over two million charging processes were recorded at publicly accessible charging points in Bavaria for the first time.
CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE:
1) Charging locations:
In Q3, a total of 449 charging locations with 1,506 charging points were added in Bavaria. This means that a considerable number of new charging points were once again connected to the grid in the past quarter. In total, over 27,500 publicly accessible charging points are now available to electric car drivers in Bavaria. Almost one in three of these newly installed charging points is a pure fast charging point (DC). The proportion of newly built charging hubs with AC & DC charging points was 11.8% in the third quarter.
2) Charging processes:
After the number of charging processes carried out at public charging points in Bavaria stagnated over the past three quarters, an increase of around 200,000 charging processes was observed in the past quarter. With over two million charging sessions now completed for the first time, an increase of over 10 percent was achieved compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the number of recorded charging sessions even increased by over 50%. Once again, around 80% of the recorded charging processes were AC charging processes and around 20% DC charging processes. A continuous shift towards DC charging can still be observed.
3) TOP 5 charging locations in Bavaria
After three consecutive quarters at the top of the ranking, the EnBW Charging Hub with 24 AC and DC charging points at the shopping center in Unterhaching has to settle for third place this quarter. This time, first place goes to the Ionity fast-charging location on the A9 in Himmelkron, which has now expanded to a total of 12 charging points with over 10,000 charging processes. The only other charging location in Bavaria with over 10,000 charging processes in the past quarter and thus second place in the current charging location ranking is the P+R location at the Munich underground and S-Bahn station Neuperlach Süd, where 80 AC charging points are available to electric vehicles. Fourth place, with over 8,500 charging processes, goes to the Ionity fast charging station in Friedberg on the A8, which has also been expanded in the meantime and now has 15 charging points. It is closely followed by the Ionity fast-charging station on the A9 at Köschinger Forst, which has 6 charging points. With just under 15 charging processes per charging point per day, this location has the highest capacity utilization among the TOP 5 charging locations in Bavaria.
Electric vehicles:
The share of new registrations (BEV + PHEV) of electric vehicles in Bavaria was 20.7% in the past quarter, which is higher than the two previous quarters (18.3% and 19.4%). The proportion of newly registered plug-in hybrids was 5.6% in the past quarter, while pure BEVs accounted for 15.1%. The number of chargeable vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per public AC charging point was recently 22 vehicles. One DC charging point in Bavaria is currently shared by the equivalent of 51 BEVs (previous quarter: 50 BEVs).
As mentioned, the share of new registrations of BEVs in Bavaria in Q3 was a good 15 percent and just under 6 percent for PHEVs. The highest rates of new registrations of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the last quarter were registered in the administrative districts of Upper Palatinate, Upper Bavaria and Middle Franconia (16% each). While the other administrative districts followed close behind, Upper Franconia was at the bottom of the list of administrative districts with just 11 percentage points.
TOP 5 districts / cities:
Broken down to cities or districts, the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Middle Franconia) landed in first place for the first time in the third quarter with a 29 percent BEV new registration rate. This district has always been among the top 3 districts/cities in the last seven quarters. The district of Schweinfurt (Lower Franconia) follows in second place with 5 percentage points less. The district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim (Middle Franconia) follows in third place with only one percentage point each, the city of Regensburg (Upper Palatinate) in fourth place and the city of Kempten im Allgäu (Swabia) in fifth place.
Compact overview
The quarterly report provides a compact overview of current developments in electromobility in Bavaria. The Electromobility Competence Center at Bayern Innovativ prepares the data in a factual and neutral manner.

*** Assumptions:
1) The vehicle stocks are based on the KBA's stock figures at the beginning of the year and are still offset against a forecast of new registrations.
2) For the ratio of charging processes per charging point, we offset the total number of recorded charging processes against the number of charging points from which we obtain dynamic ("live") data. The ratio of dynamic charging points to the total number of charging points for Bavaria is over 80%.
3) The quarterly report documents the development of public charging infrastructure in Bavaria. The information on the development of these charging options therefore relates to purely publicly accessible charging locations and therefore does not take into account charging points from closed user groups (e.g. charging points in private underground car parks, on factory premises, etc.). For technical reasons, it has not yet been possible to identify charging infrastructure that is only accessible to the public, resulting in deviations from previous quarterly reports.
