Profile
The Karlsruhe Beryllium Handling Facility is a SPIN-IN at KIT and a privately organized infrastructure for the handling of blanket-relevant materials. For more than 30 years, the engineering office GVT and the general partner KBHF GmbH have been supporting research and development at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. A cooperation with the world market leader MATERION in the USA, as well as close cooperation with ULBA (Kazakhstan) and NGK and QST (Japan) demonstrate our competence.
Products
Handling of extreme materials (toxic, respirable, highly oxidizing, hygroscopic) in glove boxes under inert gas. High-safety laboratory for handling powders such as beryllium and producing alloys from them. Hot isostatic pressing, sintering, mixing, grinding, cutting, wire EDM of large laboratory quantities (several kg). Examination and qualification of these materials in cooperation with our partner institutes at KIT.
Technology
The focus is on the solid fuel blanket based on beryllium alloys and lithium ceramics, but molten salts such as FLiBe or FLiNaBe are also possible. We are now also a partner of the KIT in the pilot production of materials for fuel generation (tritium) for a fusion reactor (lithium ceramics).
