Quarterly report on electromobility in Bavaria Q4/2024

On average one charging process per day

21.02.2025

There is currently an average of one charging process per day at the almost 28,000 publicly accessible charging points in Bavaria. However, capacity utilization varies greatly, with up to ten charging processes per day and charging point being recorded at the top Bavarian charging locations.

The figures in detail (***see assumptions)

Charging infrastructure:

1) Charging locations:

In Q4, modernizations or new installations were carried out at a total of 543 charging locations with 1,856 charging points in Bavaria. In total, there are now almost 28,000 publicly accessible charging points available to electric vehicle users. Almost one in three of these newly built or modernized charging points is a pure fast charging location (DC). The proportion of newly built or modernized charging hubs with AC & DC charging points was also a comparatively high 12.1% in the fourth quarter.

2) Charging processes:

The absolute number of charging processes carried out at publicly accessible charging points in Bavaria reached a new record high of just over 2.1 million processes. It can be observed that the proportion of DC charging processes is continuously increasing. In Q4, for example, DC charging accounted for over 23% of all recorded charging processes for the first time (with AC charging accounting for just under 77%). The average number of charging processes per charging point in this quarter was 93, which corresponds to an average of one charging process per charging point per day.

3) TOP 5 charging locations in Bavaria

The EnBW Charging Hub with 24 AC and DC charging points in the shopping area in Unterhaching was once again able to secure first place among the most frequently used charging locations in Bavaria with just over 12,000 charging processes. Second place, with over 8,000 charging sessions, goes to the recently opened Ionity location on the A8 between Augsburg and Ulm. It has 18 460kW fast-charging points for electric vehicles. The Dinzler coffee roastery's fast-charging location on Irschenberg has also secured a place among the top 5 charging locations in Bavaria for the first time. The 7,700 charging processes at the twelve 150kW fast-charging points operated by Energie Südbayern were enough for third place. 4th place, with 400 fewer charging processes, was secured by the EnBW charging hub located on the A3 in the industrial park in Heßdorf, which is equipped with a total of 24 AC and DC charging points. Finally, the Fastned charging park in Goldbach, east of Aschaffenburg, completes the list of the TOP5 charging locations in Bavaria for the last quarter of 2024 with just under 7,000 charging sessions. It is equipped with 8 300kW fast charging points and has excellent connections to the A3 and B26.

Electric vehicles:

The share of new registrations (BEV + PHEV) of electric vehicles in Bavaria was 23% in Q4/2024, the highest value of 2024. After the significant slump in Q1/2024, a continuous recovery in the share of new electric registrations can be observed. The number of chargeable vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per public AC charging point in Bavaria is currently at the same level as the previous quarter at 23 vehicles. One DC charging point in Bavaria is currently shared by the equivalent of 50 BEVs (previous quarter: 51 BEVs). The push to expand the fast-charging infrastructure in conjunction with the lower-than-expected BEV new registration figures for 2024 means that this figure is the lowest in the last three years.

The share of new BEV registrations in Bavaria in Q4 was exactly 15.3% and 7.7% for PHEVs. The figure for PHEVs is the highest in the last two years. The largest share of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) in new registrations in the past quarter was registered in the administrative district of Middle Franconia (17%). This was closely followed by the administrative district of Upper Bavaria with 16%.

TOP 5 districts / cities:

Broken down into cities or districts, the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Middle Franconia) landed in first place by a small margin in Q4/2024 with a BEV new registration rate of 28 percent. The district of Landsberg am Lech (Upper Bavaria) again followed in second place with 25%. The districts of Freising (Upper Bavaria) and Starnberg (Upper Bavaria) came in third and fourth with 24% of new registrations in the past quarter. Finally, fifth place went to the city of Kempten im Allgäu (Swabia) with 22% of new registrations.

Compact overview

*** Assumptions:
1) The vehicle stocks are based on the KBA stock figures at the beginning of the year and are still offset against a forecast of new registrations.
2) For the ratio of charging processes per charging point, we offset the total number of recorded charging processes against the number of charging points from which we obtain dynamic ("live") data. The ratio of dynamic charging points to the total number of charging points for Bavaria is over 80%.
3) The quarterly report documents the development of public charging infrastructure in Bavaria. The information on the development of these charging options therefore relates to purely publicly accessible charging locations and therefore does not take into account charging points from closed user groups (e.g. charging points in private underground car parks, on factory premises, etc.). For technical reasons, it has not yet been possible to identify charging infrastructure that is only accessible to the public, resulting in deviations from previous quarterly reports.
