The project aims to capture approximately one million metric tons of CO₂ annually at our plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), thereby avoiding up to 1.1 million metric tons of emissions each year. The initiative combines advanced capture technologies with a CO₂ transport infrastructure and has the potential to support the decarbonization of other industrial sectors.
The European Union’s Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest funding programs for low-carbon technologies, has selected the “Mususol-NetCO₂” project—which we are developing jointly with Enagás and Linde—for funding as part of its “Net-Zero Technologies” (IF25 NZT) call for proposals. The initiative, which focuses on the development of advanced CO₂ capture and transport technologies, will help drive the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries and position Spain as a pioneer in carbon management innovations.
This selection underscores the project’s innovative nature, its technological robustness, and its potential to deliver solutions for large-scale decarbonization.
An Innovative Solution for Reducing Industrial Emissions
As part of “Mosusol-NetCO₂,” an industrial-scale CO₂ capture system will be deployed at our cement plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), capable of capturing approximately one million metric tons of CO₂ annually—including the biogenic fraction. The initiative will capture approximately 97% of the emissions from the production of Portland and calcium aluminate clinker and has the potential to avoid up to 1.1 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
The project brings together the experience and expertise of the three companies. As the project sponsor, we are leading the development of the capture system at our plant; Enagás will be responsible for the CO₂ transport infrastructure; and Linde will provide the CO₂ capture technology as well as the oxygen required for the oxyfuel combustion process via an air separation unit.
Marcos Cela, CEO of Molins, stated: “The European Commission’s selection of Mosusol-NetCO₂ represents a major milestone in our decarbonization strategy. This decision confirms the potential of a project that combines technological innovation and industrial collaboration to address one of the greatest challenges facing our industry: reducing CO₂ emissions. At Molins, we continue to drive the development of solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and competitive industry and are in line with European climate goals.”
Arturo Gonzalo, CEO of Enagás, said: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ is an example of how innovation and collaboration enable progress toward large-scale decarbonization solutions. The European Commission’s selection of this project provides a significant boost to the development of a sustainable value chain for CO₂ management, in which infrastructure and the establishment of logistics centers play a key role.”
Baltasar Palanca, Managing Director of Linde Gas España, said: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ demonstrates how the combination of technological innovation and collaboration between companies can translate climate goals into concrete, large-scale projects. At Linde, we are committed to developing solutions that drive industrial transformation and can make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions.”
Another boost for industrial decarbonization
The European Commission’s selection of the project—with funding contingent upon the signing of the relevant grant agreement—represents significant progress since we announced our collaboration with Enagás in February 2025 to support the application to the Innovation Fund.
The initiative has once again been awarded the STEP (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform) seal, a European quality seal that recognizes projects aligned with the European Union’s priorities for the development of strategic technologies.
