The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is launching a new initiative to promote junior research groups in structural timber construction as part of the "Sustainable Renewable Resources" (FPNR) funding program.

The aim is to significantly increase the use of wood in the construction of residential and non-residential buildings in Germany.

Up to two excellent junior research groups at German universities or research institutions will be supported to develop innovative solutions for sustainable timber construction. The funding is aimed in particular at young scientists in civil engineering, architecture, materials science and process engineering whose doctorate was completed no more than four years ago.

Among other things, the focus is on

  • Serial timber construction and serial renovation
  • Use of modern planning and production methods (e.g. BIM, robotics)
  • Standardization in timber construction to increase safety
  • Life cycle analyses and life cycle assessments
  • Re-use concepts and unmixed dismantling

The measure is part of the German government's Timber Construction Initiative (HBI), which aims to establish wood as a climate-friendly raw material in the construction industry and increase the proportion of timber construction by 2030. In addition to research and innovation, the focus is also on recruiting young talent, securing skilled workers and knowledge transfer.

The deadline for submitting applications is September 30, 2025. Before submitting an application, it is necessary to contact the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR).

Interested parties can find more information on the funding call on the FNR website.
