Fraunhofer ISE: Energy charts provide comprehensive data on German electricity generation
15.07.2024
Ten years ago, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE launched the "Energy Charts" data platform to objectify the debate on the energy transition.
Today, the website provides detailed interactive data on German electricity generation, climate data, emissions and prices as well as information on 42 European countries.
It all began in 2011 with a warning of a blackout at Whitsun due to high solar feed-in. Prof. Bruno Burger from Fraunhofer ISE responded by collecting electricity generation data in order to objectify the debate. This gave rise to the idea of a website, which has since grown into one of Europe's largest data platforms in the energy sector.
In addition to comprehensive data on energy production, imports/exports, climate data and power plant emissions, the platform now also offers an interactive power plant map and data in four languages. Since December 2023, the "Stromampel-App" has supplemented the offering by displaying the share of renewable energies in electricity generation and exchange electricity prices.
The energy charts record around 100 million views per year and provide around 250 million graphics. Prof. Bruno Burger contributes to the information with over 100 interviews and numerous talks. Since June 2021, the "Energy Charts Talks" have provided a monthly opportunity to share and discuss the latest electricity generation data.
