FHIR is becoming the central standard for the exchange of clinical data. The presentation explains the structure and benefits of FHIR in an understandable way, shows examples of data and APIs and places its significance in the context of current developments such as DiGA, European interoperability and EHDS.

FHIR is increasingly becoming the common denominator for the exchange of clinical data. The presentation gives an understandable introduction to FHIR against the background of older standards and proprietary interfaces and shows which problem FHIR solves in modern healthcare systems. It also highlights the growing practical importance of FHIR in the context of regulatory developments such as DiGA, European interoperability efforts and EHDS. Using concrete data and API examples, it will become tangible how FHIR is structured, how resources are modeled and what role terminologies such as SNOMED CT and LOINC play for semantic interoperability.

Till Gerken is CTO at Evoleen, a service provider for the development of digital health applications.
