While online training courses are already frequently used, other techniques such as virtual training or virtual labs have only rarely been used to date. However, these can be very supportive, especially when it comes to transferring practical knowledge.

Training and further education:

There is an increasing need for well-trained employees, particularly in the semiconductor industry. The investments planned under the EU Chips Act will increase this demand even further, with the result that a gap of 350,000 skilled workers is feared in the European semiconductor industry by 2030. Various projects are working on increasing the range of relevant training opportunities and their attractiveness. One bottleneck is practical experience in laboratories: there are only a few locations where trainees/students have the opportunity to gain practical experience on equipment such as that used in the semiconductor industry. Virtual technologies can help here.

Get to know and understand customer processes:

Particularly in the semiconductor sector, suppliers sometimes only have a superficial knowledge of their customers' downstream processes. However, knowledge of technical details is usually a prerequisite for the targeted improvement or further development of products. Virtual laboratories make it easier to gain a deeper understanding of processes - with little effort on the part of employees.

Knowledge transfer between locations:

The transfer of knowledge or experience, e.g. how to operate/maintain a complex system, normally requires an exchange on site. In the case of remote locations, this not only means a lot of traveling, but also - due to the limited training time - the risk of subsequent operating errors. The use of virtual technologies can often save time and money in these cases.

People from industry and research who are generally involved in training and further education and want to find out about the possibilities of virtual technologies.
