Quarterly report on electromobility in Bavaria Q1/2025

More than 32,000 publicly accessible charging points already available in Bavaria today

07.05.2025

The development of charging infrastructure is being continuously driven forward in Bavaria. Electric vehicle drivers can now recharge their vehicles at over 32,000 public charging points in Bavaria.

The figures in detail (***see assumptions)

Charging infrastructure

1) Charging locations:

In Q1, modernizations or new installations were carried out at a total of 585 charging points in Bavaria. In total, there are now almost 32,500 publicly accessible charging points available to electric mobility enthusiasts, whose current occupancy status and much more information can be viewed via the Bavarian Charging Atlas (Ladeatlas Bayern). 77 percent of these charging points are AC charging points with type 2 plugs. Among the newly installed charging points, an increase in DC-only charging points can be seen compared to the existing distribution. Nevertheless, over 73 percent of the portfolio still consists of AC-only charging points.

2) Charging processes:

The absolute number of charging processes carried out at publicly accessible charging points in Bavaria reached a new high of over 2.7 million processes. It is striking that the number of DC charging processes, at over 1.4 million, exceeded the number of AC charging processes, at 1.3 million, for the first time. In the past quarter, an average of 84 charging processes were carried out per charging point and an average of just under 24 kWh (estimated) was charged per charging process. In total, this means that a charging volume of 65 GWh can be forecast for Bavaria in Q1 2025.

3) TOP 10 charging locations in Bavaria

At the BMW locations in Dingolfing (7th place) and Munich (1st place), there are very large (semi-)public charging hubs with 258 and 641 charging points respectively, which provide a wide range of charging capacities for their users. Due to the high number of charging points, a correspondingly high number of charging processes are also carried out there, meaning that these locations are ranked 1st and 7th. In terms of the average number of charging processes per charging point, however, these locations are well below the Bavarian average, which, as mentioned, is 84, with less than 50 charging processes per quarter.
The situation is completely different at locations 2, 5 and 8. At these Ionity fast-charging parks, which are located directly on highways 8 and 9, well over 1,000 charging processes per charging point were carried out in the last quarter. At the charging location with the highest frequency in Holzkirchen, over 1,400 processes were even registered per charging point, which corresponds to an average of over 16 charging processes per charging point per day. The other TOP 10 charging locations in Bavaria are also charging parks close to the highway. The only exception is 10th place, which is a supermarket parking lot in Munich that was equipped with 27 AC and DC charging points by V-Markt and Virta. At this location, 310 charging processes per charging point were recorded in Q1, meaning that these charging points are used almost four times more frequently than the average for Bavaria as a whole.

4) TOP 10 CPOs in Bavaria

In terms of CPOs (charge point operators), a differentiated picture emerges for AC and DC operators in Bavaria. Over a third of Bavaria's publicly accessible AC charging points are operated by Ladeverbund+ and Stadtwerke München. Vaylens, Virta and LichtBlick follow at a considerable distance behind. The top 10 AC CPOs operated almost 65% of the Bavarian AC charging infrastructure in Q1 2025.
The picture is somewhat different for the operators of the Bavarian DC charging infrastructure. On the one hand, three food retailers - Kaufland, Lidl and Edeka - are represented among the TOP10 CPOs. On the other hand, E.On Drive Infrastructure dominates the DC charging infrastructure operators by a wide margin with a market share of over 15 percent. EnBW follows in second place with just under 10 percent, followed by Kaufland with just under 9 percent. The TOP 10 DC CPOs operated almost 63% of the Bavarian DC charging infrastructure in Q1 2025 and therefore had a similarly high total market share as the AC TOP 10 CPOs.

Electric vehicles:

The share of new registrations (BEV + PHEV) of electric vehicles in Bavaria was 25.1% in Q1/2025, around two percentage points higher than in the previous quarter. This means that the proportion of newly registered BEVs + PHEVs has risen continuously in recent quarters, even without subsidies, and one in four newly registered cars can now be powered purely by electricity. There are currently over 420,000 chargeable cars on the road in Bavaria. The number of chargeable vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per public AC charging point in Bavaria is currently at a low level compared to previous quarters at 21 vehicles. One DC charging point in Bavaria is currently shared by the equivalent of 46 BEVs (previous quarter: 50 BEVs). This means that the efforts to expand the charging infrastructure in Bavaria are having an effect.

The proportion of new registrations of BEVs in Bavaria in Q1 was 16.3% and of PHEVs 8.8%. The largest share of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) in new registrations was registered in the administrative district of Lower Franconia (17.7%). This was closely followed by the administrative districts of Middle Franconia, Upper Bavaria and Swabia.

The trend for e-trucks and e-semitrailer tractors is also clearly pointing upwards. In Q1 2025, e-trucks accounted for 4.5 percentage points of new registrations. The share of newly registered e-tractors was 0.8 percent. In the commercial vehicle sector, too, there are already over 10,000 all-electric e-trucks and e-trucks on the roads in Bavaria.

TOP 5 districts / cities passenger cars:

Broken down to cities or districts, the city of Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria) comes in first place in Q1 2025 with a BEV new registration rate of over 32 percent. The district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Middle Franconia) follows close behind in second place with just under 29%. The district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim (Middle Franconia) follows in third place, also just under 3 percentage points behind. The city of Kempten im Allgäu (Swabia) and the district of Schweinfurt (Lower Franconia) take 4th and 5th place respectively with around 23% of new BEV registrations.

TOP 5 districts / cities for e-trucks:

In the e-truck category, the city of Bamberg (Upper Franconia), with a very high share of new e-truck registrations of 43 percent, comes in first place by a correspondingly large margin. The city of Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria) also makes it to one of the very top ranks (2nd place) in the e-truck category with a 27 percent share of new e-truck registrations. 3rd, 4th and 5th place with approx. 13 percent go to the district of Aschaffenburg (Lower Franconia), the city of Coburg (Upper Franconia) and the district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm (Upper Franconia).

*** Assumptions:

1) The vehicle inventories are based on the KBA inventory figures at the beginning of the year and are offset against a forecast of new registrations.
2) For the ratio of charging processes per charging point, we offset the total number of recorded charging processes against the number of charging points from which we obtain dynamic ("live") data. The ratio of dynamic charging points to the total number of charging points for Bavaria is over 80%.
3) The quarterly report documents the development of public charging infrastructure in Bavaria. The information on the development of these charging options therefore relates to publicly accessible charging locations and therefore does not generally take into account charging points from closed user groups (e.g. charging points in private underground car parks, on factory premises, etc.).
