The State of the Energy Union 2024 report published in mid-September shows that the EU has made progress in recent years in increasing energy security, controlling the energy market and accelerating the transition to climate neutrality. The most important results are:
- Reduced dependence on Russia:
The share of Russian gas in EU imports has fallen from 45% in 2021 to 18% in June 2024. - Increased energy security:
The EU has filled its gas storage to 90% by August 2024, reaching its target for the winter - Stable energy prices:
Energy prices have fallen since the highs of the 2022 energy crisis and remain stable - Renewable energy:
Renewable energy now accounts for 50% of electricity generated in the EU, with wind power overtaking gas production to become the EU's second largest source of electricity. - Energy efficiency:
EU primary energy consumption fell by 4.1% in 2022, but further action is needed to meet the target of reducing final energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030 - International cooperation:
The EU has launched a global initiative to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency measures, which was endorsed by all Parties at COP 28 in Dubai.
The Commission emphasizes the need to implement the new legal framework to counteract high energy prices and accelerate infrastructure development. It also reaffirms its commitment to learn lessons from the over-reliance on a single supplier and to continue the project of joint procurement of raw materials.
