THINK BIG & START: Startup Competition for the Green Economy

The Water and Energy Competence Network e.V. is seeking innovative startup ideas and offers support in the form of up to 5,000 euros in prize money as well as mentoring.
More and more people in Germany are taking the plunge into self-employment, particularly in the green economy and green technology sectors. Founders currently find excellent growth prospects here, yet many good ideas are still waiting to be brought to life. This is exactly where “Think Big & Start” comes in: The Water and Energy Competence Network (Kompetenznetzwerk Wasser und Energie e.V.) in Hof guides aspiring entrepreneurs on the journey from idea to implementation and helps them further develop existing projects.
Innovative business ideas for the green economy are welcome, as are young companies looking to establish or strengthen their position in the market. Whether it’s a technical solution, a new business model, or a service, the scope ranges from water, energy, and the environment to sustainability, climate adaptation, and climate protection, all the way to digitalization and artificial intelligence. Energy efficiency, waste heat recovery, renewable energy, recycling, water reuse, and flood protection also offer significant market opportunities.
The competition is open to anyone who wants to bring a business idea to life and is either in the startup phase or has recently launched a company. Winners will receive prize money and mentoring to help them implement their projects. In addition, all participants benefit from expert feedback from the jury, valuable industry contacts, and increased visibility.
After the application deadline, a jury will select the six most compelling entries. These teams will present their ideas in a pitch to the jury, which will then determine the rankings. The three best concepts will then be honored in Hof: First place comes with a prize of 5,000 euros, second place with 3,000 euros, and third place with 1,500 euros.
With “Think Big & Start,” the Kompetenznetzwerk Wasser und Energie e.V. aims to tap into new innovation potential and promote sustainable startups. The goal is to give sustainable business ideas a boost and bring innovative solutions to tomorrow’s challenges to the forefront.
The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy is funding this project through the Regional Management Bavaria program.
The application period runs from October 15, 2026, through January 31, 2027.
