Baywa Re has sold its largest European storage project with 300 MW and 1.28 million kWh in the Netherlands.
The Munich-based project developer Baywa Re and its Dutch subsidiary, the project developer GroenLeven, have sold a 300 MW battery storage project with a storage capacity of 1.28 million kWh in the north of the Netherlands to the Rotterdam-based tank storage company Vopak. According to Baywa Re, this is the Munich-based company's largest storage project on European soil to date. All the necessary permits and the grid connection to the high-voltage grid of the transmission system operator Tennet have been obtained, according to the press release.
Groenleven, which operates in the Netherlands as a developer of large-scale solar and storage solutions, had brought the project to construction maturity. Vopak is now to take over the further implementation and construct a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS).
The storage system is intended to help improve the flexibility and security of supply of the Dutch electricity system. The intermediate storage of electricity from wind and solar power plants allows more flexible feeding into the grid. This avoids gaps in supply and cushions price fluctuations in the electricity market.
"The successful completion of the sale confirms our leading role in the development of battery storage projects in Europe," says Benjamin Casteleyn, CCO of Groenleven, with conviction. The project demonstrates the company's commitment to advancing storage solutions as a key technology for the energy transition.
With the sale to Vopak, Baywa Re is expanding its own portfolio of reference projects in the field of energy storage. According to the company, the expertise gained will be used for further projects in the Netherlands and beyond.
Baywa Re, based in Munich, develops, operates and markets renewable energy projects worldwide and also acts as an independent power producer. The Dutch subsidiary Groenleven focuses on solar and storage solutions, primarily for large-scale applications. Vopak, on the other hand, is an international operator of tank storage facilities and intends to expand its business activities into the electricity sector by investing in storage projects.
