Engine manufacturer Deutz and HDC Solutions have agreed to a partnership for power supply systems for critical infrastructure. The focus is on emergency power solutions.

Cologne-based engine and energy systems manufacturer Deutz has entered into a partnership with Ingolstadt-based company HDC Solutions. The goal of the collaboration is to develop power supply systems for critical infrastructure as well as military applications both domestically and abroad, Deutz announced on June 16. HDC Solutions specializes in resilient energy and mobility systems.

The companies intend to combine their respective areas of expertise, according to the press release. Deutz will contribute power generators, storage systems, and hardware integration expertise. HDC Solutions will provide software for controlling and prioritizing energy flows in mobile and stationary applications. The systems are designed to ensure a continuous energy supply even in the event of disruptions or outages.

The companies cite the increasing vulnerability of energy infrastructures as the reason for the need for such solutions. In addition to widespread power outages, they point to hybrid threat scenarios in which utility facilities and grid infrastructure can become targets of attack.

The Growing Importance of Energy Security

“Modern threat landscapes and increasing electrification now require more than simple backup power solutions. What is needed are intelligent systems that control, prioritize, and secure complex energy flows in the event of an emergency,” explained Deutz CEO Sebastian Schulte.

Against this backdrop, systems for decentralized energy supply, energy storage, and load control are gaining importance for operators of critical infrastructure as well as for military users. The collaboration between Deutz and HDC Solutions aims to provide such solutions as integrated systems.

The two companies have already unveiled the first result of their collaboration: the “GridCube” energy management system. According to Deutz, it seamlessly connects and controls any energy sources and storage systems with various consumers within a decentralized architecture. The public power grid can also be integrated as an energy source. This system was developed in collaboration with the Institute for Thermodynamics and Sustainable Propulsion Systems (ITNA) at Graz University of Technology.

Deutz aims to achieve sales of at least 300 million euros in the “Defense” segment by 2030. The partnership is intended to help offer integrated systems for federal properties, critical infrastructure, and military facilities.

HDC Solutions was founded in 2024 and develops software and hardware solutions for the planning, control, and optimization of energy systems. The company emerged as a spin-off from the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich and targets its offerings at operators of military facilities and critical infrastructure, among others.
