BMWK presents new strategy for phasing out coal and expanding hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants
25.07.2024
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK) has published the key points of the new power plant strategy, which are to be enshrined in the Power Plant Security Act. This is intended to secure the coal phase-out and facilitate the transition to hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants.
Tenders are planned for five gigawatts (GW) of new H2-ready plants and the conversion of existing gas-fired power plants with a capacity of two GW. These will be allowed to use gas for seven years before being converted to hydrogen. In addition, 500 megawatts (MW) of immediately hydrogen-powered sprinter plants and a tranche of 500 MW for long-term storage will be funded. To ensure security of supply, tenders are planned for five GW of new gas-fired power plants, which must be climate-neutral by 2045.
A planned levy for electricity consumers is intended to finance the promotion of these gas-fired power plants, which poses additional challenges for energy-intensive companies. The exact amount of the levy has not yet been determined.
However, companies can optimize their electricity costs through tax privileges and decentralized energy generation models. Rödl & Partner offers tailor-made solutions to make investments and conversions successful and to navigate safely through the legal and financial framework conditions.
