Bavaria Supports Hydrogen Commercial Vehicles

Bavaria is providing up to 15 million euros for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. Companies can submit applications starting August 5.

For twelve weeks starting then, companies can apply for grants to purchase or lease fuel cell and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy will launch the first call for proposals for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles on August 5. Up to 15 million euros are available for this funding round.

Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters), cites what he describes as high demand in the corresponding federal program as the reason for the state funding. The Free State aims to provide companies with greater planning certainty and to stimulate investment in the development, production, and deployment of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

Support is available for both fuel cell vehicles and commercial vehicles with hydrogen combustion engines. The funding applies to the purchase and leasing of vehicles used primarily for freight transport. These include light delivery vans and Class N1 vans with a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 metric tons, medium-duty Class N2 trucks with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 to 12 metric tons, and heavy-duty Class N3 trucks and tractor-trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 12 metric tons. The program does not cover passenger cars or buses.

The Free State covers up to 80 percent of the eligible additional costs compared to a comparable conventionally powered commercial vehicle. The determining factor is therefore not the total vehicle price, but the price difference calculated by the funding agency. The maximum grant amount per vehicle depends on the vehicle class and is specified in the call for applications.

More Time for the Purchase

In parallel with the first call for applications, the Free State of Bavaria is amending the funding conditions for “BayH2N” (Bavarian Funding Program for Hydrogen-Powered Commercial Vehicles). In the future, companies will have 18 months instead of 12 to purchase the vehicles. Additionally, the previous requirement that subsidized vehicles must travel at least 20,000 kilometers per year has been eliminated.

The revised guidelines also clarify the period of designated use and the payment procedure for leasing. The period of designated use specifies how long a subsidized vehicle must be used for its intended purpose.

Bayern Innovativ GmbH, as the project operator, will accept applications until October 28 at 12:00 p.m. The company plans to publish further information on the eligibility requirements and the application process at the start of the application window.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the program complements existing Bavarian funding programs for electrolysers and hydrogen refueling stations. The Free State of Bavaria is thus supporting hydrogen production, refueling infrastructure, and the use of hydrogen as an energy source in commercial vehicle transportation. The ministry believes this covers the entire hydrogen value chain in the transportation sector.
