Augsburg County Relies on LEW Data Centers

LEW provides the district with high-performance data center and fiber-optic infrastructure, thereby supporting the administration, schools, and digital citizen services.

The Augsburg district is restructuring its IT infrastructure and will rely on the data centers of Lechwerke (LEW) in the future.

The Bavarian Augsburg district has migrated its IT systems to data centers operated by “LEW TelNet,” a wholly owned subsidiary of Lechwerke AG. The migration was completed within six months, LEW announced on September 1. According to LEW, geographically separate locations and continuous data mirroring are designed to guarantee maximum reliability.

“Together with LEW, we have a modern, highly secure IT infrastructure—it is the foundation for high-quality public services and sustainably successful learning in our schools,” emphasized Martin Sailer, District Administrator of the Augsburg district.

According to Lechwerke, the district’s new IT infrastructure is distributed across two geographically separate LEW data centers: the Green Data Center in Augsburg-Oberhausen and another data center in the region. The district uses both data centers as part of a colocation service: LEW provides two racks exclusively at each location.

The district operates its own servers at LEW’s Telnet Data Center to run applications and process data in parallel and to ensure that central IT services remain available without interruption, even in the event of a failure. According to LEW’s IT subsidiary, this is based on a clear data strategy: the transmission, processing, and storage of all administrative data take place within LEW’s regional IT infrastructure. The partnership between the district and LEW has been in place since 2014 and has now been extended through 2030.

The district administration office is directly connected to the data centers via an exclusively provided fiber-optic connection with a bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s, LEW further reported. Thirty additional administrative and school locations in the district also access the district’s IT system via LEW’s regional fiber-optic network. For the 18 district schools, LEW has additionally set up a dual connection, each with a speed of 1 Gbit/s. School administration and the educational network run over two separate fiber-optic lines.

Green Data Center Relys on Renewable Energy

According to LEW, the Green Data Center in Augsburg-Oberhausen meets the requirements of DIN EN 50600 and ISO/IEC 27001. Redundant technical systems, security measures, and fiber-optic connections are designed to ensure the availability of the IT systems operated there.

According to LEW, the company uses exclusively electricity from renewable sources for the data center’s regular operations. In terms of energy accounting, this electricity comes from photovoltaic systems and regional hydropower; the company has the corresponding certificates of origin validated by the Federal Environment Agency. The energy concept also includes air-to-air heat exchangers for cooling and the utilization of server waste heat.

For its uninterruptible power supply, the data center uses kinetic energy storage systems instead of conventional battery systems. Green roofs and facades are also designed to reduce the building’s cooling requirements. LEW thus combines measures related to power procurement, cooling, and emergency power supply.

In addition to the district, the company offers data center capacity to other businesses, government agencies, and municipalities. The offerings range from server spaces for individual servers to complete racks and physically partitioned areas. These are supplemented by, among other things, backup, maintenance, and operational services, as well as so-called “remote hands” services.
