EU project SUMMSEED: Sustainable steels through additive manufacturing

28.04.2026

With the launch of the EU-funded research project SUMMSEED (SUstainable Medium Manganese StEEls), an international consortium is tackling the development of sustainable steels for applications in heavy industry and mining. The focus is on new steel alloys with a medium manganese content that are being developed specifically for industrial casting processes and for additive manufacturing and repair using Directed Energy Deposition (DED).

A central goal of the project is to reduce CO₂ emissions, minimize the use of critical alloying elements and extend the service life of highly stressed components. Additive manufacturing plays a key role here: components are to be manufactured, repaired and reused in a resource-efficient manner through the targeted use of wire DED.

As a technology partner, Meltio is contributing its industrial DED laser technology and supporting process development for additive metal 3D printing and remanufacturing applications. SUMMSEED is thus making an important contribution to strengthening the circular economy and the industrial implementation of sustainable AM solutions in the metal sector.
