Prof. Dr. Alexander Hartmaier is currently chair professor for Mechanics of Materials at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany, and Director at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), a central unit of RUB, where he is head of the department Micromechanical and Macroscopic Modeling.

He completed his PhD degree at the University of Stuttgart in 2001. He has published more than 180 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and is main contributor of 4 open-source software projects. The focus of his research work lies on micromechanical and scalebridging modeling of deformation, fracture and fatigue of metallic alloys and heterogeneous materials and, more recently, on data-oriented constitutive modeling and applications of machine learning in materials science.
