Identification and Assessment of International Future Technologies in the Energy Sector and Their Potential for Bavaria

Which future technologies in the energy sector are relevant on a global scale, and what opportunities do they present for Bavaria?
Through the “Energy Industry Scouting” initiative within the International Scouting project, Bayern Innovativ, together with partners in foreign trade, is examining international technology developments in key future-oriented fields of the energy sector.
The results provide important impetus for the further development of Bavaria as a hub for innovation and for tailored foreign trade support measures.

Through its new “International Technology Scouting” initiative, Bayern Innovativ analyzes globally relevant future technologies as part of Bavaria’s research, technology, and innovation strategy and assesses their potential for Bavaria as a hub of innovation. The focus is on high technologies at various stages of application with Technology Readiness Levels ranging from 5 to 8. The goal is to identify international business opportunities at an early stage, highlight Bavaria’s strengths, identify potential for technology transfer within Bavaria, and uncover strategic gaps in technology and value creation. The evaluation is based on the criteria of expertise in Bavaria, production capacities, technology needs, and the need for action.
Over the course of the project, international technology developments in the specialized field of energy were systematically researched, structured, and consolidated into a long list of relevant future technologies for the Bavarian economy. The subsequent selection and evaluation were carried out in collaboration with internal departments at Bayern Innovativ as well as external experts from industry, academia, and the entire Bavarian innovation ecosystem. The technologies were classified according to the criteria of Bavarian expertise, existing or lacking production capacities, international technology demand, export opportunities, transfer potential, and strategic need for action.

In the Energy pilot project, a total of 50 future technologies from the fields of smart energy grids, storage technologies, sustainable energy generation, heating & efficiency, and CleanTech were examined. A total of 68 Bavarian industry and technology experts participated in the evaluation of the technologies. In addition, qualitative assessment interviews were conducted with a total of 10 Bavarian companies from the respective application fields.

  • Smart Meters & Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

There are still strategic gaps in expertise and value creation in Bavaria regarding these technologies; they can therefore be considered priority technologies, and these gaps should be addressed in collaboration with international technology leaders:

  • Lithium-sulfur batteries
  • Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)
  • AI-Based Grid Optimization & Predictive Maintenance
  • High-Temperature Heat Pumps for Industrial Applications

  • Ground-coupled heat pumps with geothermal probes
  • Redox flow batteries
  • PEM electrolysis
  • Chemical recycling of plastics
