Summary
WEPROG stands for Weather and Energy PROGnoses and provides real-time ensemble weather forecasts.
Profile
WEPROG GmbH was founded in Germany in 2003 with the aim of developing a real-time weather forecast system for the electricity market in order to provide companies working with weather-sensitive goods and services with a suitable tool for this purpose.
The basis for this was the MSEPS Ensemble Weather Forecast System (Multi Scheme Ensemble Prediction System).
The basis for this was the MSEPS Ensemble Weather Prediction System (Multi Scheme Ensemble Prediction System), which is capable of representing the physical uncertainty of weather development.
Since 2006, forecasts have been generated 4 times a day with a forecast horizon of up to 7 days and in different horizontal resolutions with so-called regional models set up worldwide, as needed.
This real-time data is used in a wide variety of applications currently on all continents of the world.
In 2010, the processing of any kind of relevant measurement data became possible by implementing an Ensemble Kalman filter for data assimilation of the short-term forecasts.
Products
- Production of own physic. Ensemble weather forecasts (75) in the short and medium range (up to 7 days) worldwide .
- Providing wind/solar power forecasts incl. physical uncertainties/probabilities from one source .
- Graphical interface for weather forecasts, power forecasts and probability distributions, also directly integrable .
- High-security B2B interface for plant monitoring in the O&M area for operation and maintenance of individual plants and portfolios .
- Flexible portfolio management system suitable for customers with constantly growing, changing sites, e.g. in direct marketing .
- Providing trade-optimized forecasts for portfolios of wind and solar plants with exploitation of ensemble forecasts for uncertainty reduction .
- Supply of long-term time series from WEPROG's historical database for studies in weather, resource determination as well as research .
- 24/7 service with high redundancy and support by state-of-the-art communication methods .
Technology
WEPROG has developed a unique operational forecast system based on the so-called Multi-Scheme Ensemble forecast approach. In this approach, different but clearly defined weather forecast models are combined into one overall system. WEPROG's Multi-Scheme Ensemble Forecasting System (MSEPS) generates 75 different weather forecasts and uses them for the forecast of renewable energies, such as wind and solar production and other relevant weather products. This multi-scheme ensemble forecasting approach thus provides a crucial piece of information: a physically-based uncertainty of weather development.
WEPROG operates and maintains multiple Linux clusters distributed üacross three countries for maximum redundancy and security and to provide continuous and fail-safe forecasts. Real-time products are available worldwide with four weather updates per day at 00,06,12,18 UTC and forecast horizons up to 7 days.
