Profile
Since 2011, the Chair of Energy Process Technology (EVT) of the Department of Chemical and Bioengineering of the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg has been working on new technologies and concepts for a CO2-neutral energy supply in the heart of Nuremberg on AEG. Under the direction of Prof.Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Karl, the scientific focus of the research is on biomass combustion and gasification, second generation fuels and fuel cells as well as the energy economic evaluation of energy systems. Our day-to-day research activities combine on the one hand the development, construction and operation of experimental plants with thermal capacities up to 100 kWth, and on the other hand the modeling and simulation of real thermal processes. The research topics are characterized by social relevance and also take into account the economic aspects. Since September 2020, the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering (CBI) has been strengthened by a new junior professor. With the Junior Professorship for Decentralized Energy Process Engineering, Prof. Dr. Katharina Herkendell will deal with thermal, biological and electrochemical processes of energy conversion. With a special focus on enzymatic and microbial biofuel and electrolysis cells, she complements and expands our research profile in the direction of bioelectrocatalytic systems.
