Planet Labs provides governments and defense organizations with high-frequency, near-daily satellite imagery and AI-powered data analytics for strategic reconnaissance and situational assessment. This is used, among other things, to monitor military bases, critical infrastructure, and maritime vessel movements worldwide in order to detect behavioral patterns or anomalies at an early stage.

Technology / Research

Core technological competencies:

  • Large-scale satellite constellations (“Agile Aerospace”): Development, construction, and operation of hundreds of compact, cost-effective small satellites (such as Dove, SkySat, and Pelican) for deployment in low Earth orbit.
  • High-Frequency Revisit: The ability to re-image nearly the entire landmass of the Earth daily and to provide flexible, high-resolution imagery for specific target areas.
  • Automated Data Infrastructure & APIs: Powerful cloud platforms for the automated processing, calibration, and rapid delivery of vast amounts of geospatial data.
  • Optical & Multispectral Sensors: In-house development of advanced camera systems for visible (RGB), near-infrared (NIR), and hyperspectral wavelength ranges.

Key R&D Focus Areas:

  • AI & Computer Vision (“Planetary Intelligence”): Integration of machine learning for automated object recognition (e.g., vehicles, ships, buildings) and for the early detection of behavioral patterns or changes on the Earth’s surface.
  • Hyperspectral Earth Observation: Development of the next generation of satellites (such as the Tanager constellation) to measure greenhouse gases (e.g., methane), spectral signatures, and environmental parameters.
  • Advanced Sensor Fusion & “Planetary Variables”: Combining proprietary satellite data with external data sources to generate derived indicators (e.g., soil moisture, biomass, vegetation temperature).
  • Real-time processing & edge computing in orbit: Research into technologies for analyzing data directly on the satellite to transmit critical alerts to ground stations even faster.

Products / Services

For its satellites, Planet Labs combines daily global overview imagery from the PlanetScope fleet with high-resolution SkySat and Pelican satellites for targeted, on-demand detailed analysis. The Tanager constellation complements this system with hyperspectral sensor technology. In Planet’s ISR Data and Analytics solutions, AI automatically converts image data into actionable insights. Algorithms detect ships, vehicles, or changes in infrastructure, trigger alerts via automatic change detection, and enable seamless maritime surveillance even without positioning signals, while the historical image archive is used to analyze behavioral patterns. In the Platform & Integration division, all data and analyses are integrated directly into military command and control and geoinformation systems via cloud interfaces. Since this data is commercial and unclassified, the reconnaissance results can be shared immediately among allied nations and partners without any security restrictions.
