Profile

The IPI—Institute for Production and Information Technology at Kempten University of Applied Sciences (Sonthofen campus)—possesses core competencies that are highly relevant to the development of humanoid robotics:

1. Digital Twins & Virtual Commissioning
As one of the institute’s key research areas, the IPI brings extensive experience in the modeling, simulation, and programming implementation of digital twins. For humanoid robotics, this means that motion sequences, kinematics, sensor systems, and control logic can be virtually simulated, tested, and optimized in advance before being deployed on real hardware—which significantly reduces development time and risk.

2. Additive Manufacturing of Application-Specific Components
The “Additive and Circular Manufacturing” division enables the rapid, iterative production of custom-tailored mechanical components—such as application-specific gripper hands for humanoid systems. 3D-printed prototyping enables close integration of design, functional testing, and adaptation to specific application scenarios.

3. Science–Industry Interface
As a technology transfer center, the IPI directly supports industry partners in research and development projects related to Industry 4.0—with approximately 900 m² of office space and a technical center in Sonthofen, as well as additional expertise in data-driven/self-learning production and the Industrial Metaverse/machine learning."
