Profile
Fraunhofer UMSICHT Sulzbach-Rosenberg makes a sustainable contribution to the energy and raw material turnaround through business-oriented innovations in energy and plant technology as well as in circular economy.
Focal points in energy and plant technology are the development of processes and plants for the conversion of biogenic residues into valuable, storable products (e.g. green fuels and biocoal).
We offer research and development services for conversion processes such as combustion, gasification, and pyrolysis, for thermal storage, and for the production of energy carriers such as synthesis gas and fuels.
Additional know-how in the areas of process heat, cogeneration, and emission reduction allow efficient and clean solutions to emerge.
The site has facilities for the decentralized energetic use of biomass, biogenic residues and waste by means of thermochemical processes, mobile and stationary thermal and chemical energy storage systems as well as modern catalyst test stands, hydrogenation and distillation units.
In the laboratories, test rigs and measuring equipment are available for the investigation of firing systems, filter systems and energy storage systems, as well as extensive flue gas cleaning and advanced online gas analysis.
- Thermochemical processes
- Energy from biomass
- Process heat and storage integration
The Circular economy portfolio includes the creation of waste management strategies, the development of novel recycling processes and the production of powder materials.
In the area of waste management strategies, feasibility and economic feasibility studies, sustainability assessments, resource strategies and concepts for recycling waste are developed - both in a national and international context.
The Recycling Technologies group develops novel equipment and processes for recycling waste containing plastics, composite materials and minerals. These include processes for the chemical recycling of plastics.
In the powder materials area, the focus is on processes for powder production, materials development and materials recycling - with an emphasis on additive manufacturing.
- Waste and Resource Strategies
- Recycling Technologies
- Input Materials for Additive Manufacturing
The Industry Lab in 2019 opened CES Technical Center (Center for Energy Storage) in Sulzbach-Rosenberg provides companies with a digital development, test and application environment.
The technical focus is on the fields of energy technology, recycling and plant engineering or process engineering.
The Lab is ideally suited for agile project teams or corporate start-ups seeking creativity and freedom. For prototype development, companies can use the mechanical workshop with additive manufacturing, the institute's own digital framework, as well as laboratories and test areas.
Collaboration with our experts from IT and science leads to rapid results in process optimization, new product or service development, all the way to the digital business model.
