Epa is the interdisciplinary research and service institute for materials science and technology development of the ETH Domain. As a bridge between research and practice, it develops solutions for the priority challenges of industry and society in the areas of nanostructured, «smart» materials and surfaces, environmental, energy and sustainable building technologies – cleantech applications – and bio, medical and textile technologies. By transforming research results into marketable innovations through efficient technology transfer in collaboration with industrial partners, Empa plays a key role in strengthening the competitiveness of the Swiss economy. It also creates the scientific basis for sustainable social development.

The goal is to equip fibers and textiles with specific functions such as hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, active ingredient delivery, odor inhibition, flame retardancy, electrical and optical conductivity, soil repellency and much more.
