LION Smart is an innovative technology company focused on the development, integration, and production of battery systems and electrical energy storage solutions. As a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG, headquartered in Switzerland, LION Smart combines technological excellence, engineering expertise, and a commitment to sustainability to actively shape the energy and mobility transition.
Since its founding, LION Smart has specialized in developing customized battery systems for the automotive industry and other demanding applications. The company covers the entire value chain—from concept development through prototyping and testing to integration into series-production products. With state-of-the-art development and testing facilities, LION Smart offers its customers comprehensive engineering services that meet the highest safety, performance, and quality standards.
One of LION Smart’s key innovative products is the immersion-cooled battery—a modular high-voltage battery system that sets new standards in efficiency, safety, and scalability. The thermal management of an immersion-cooled battery improves dynamics and efficiency by submerging the cells in a dielectric fluid. Combined with fast battery management systems (BMS), electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and advanced analytics, this innovation optimizes performance and ensures safety even at very high charge and discharge rates. We have successfully completed proof-of-concepts with OEM customers for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and megawatt charging for heavy-duty trucks, demonstrating first-class cooling and optimal thermal management. This makes the system suitable for both electric vehicles and stationary energy storage applications.
The combination of in-depth expertise, state-of-the-art production technology, and practical experience makes LION Smart a reliable partner for OEMs, suppliers, and industrial companies.
In addition, LION Smart is developing cutting-edge energy storage solutions for stationary applications (BESS)—such as grid stabilization, renewable energy, or storage for industrial and commercial use. The goal is to make energy available in a sustainable, efficient, and flexible manner. By intelligently connecting mobility and energy, LION Smart is making a significant contribution to the decarbonization of the economy and the reduction of global CO₂ emissions.
The “SMaDBatt” project (Sustainable Materials and Design for Battery Housings) aims to develop environmentally and economically sound solutions for the material selection and design of battery housings. The primary focus is on renewable raw materials such as wood and cork. The project consists of five sub-studies, three of which are dedicated to “materials” and two to “design.” In the “Material” area, the project aims to make material resources—such as thinned wood, recycled wood, and bark—which have rarely been used for high-value applications to date, usable for the mobility industry. This is to be achieved through technological measures (e.g., upgrading, modification) as well as by identifying accessible material flows in terms of sources, quantity, quality, and price. In the “Design” focus area, the project aims to improve the quality of secondary raw materials and the recyclability of battery housings and their components through design for disassembly. In addition, the energy efficiency of electric vehicles is to be increased through adapted thermal management.
Global demand for energy—and electricity in particular—is on the rise, and companies must prepare for a profound transformation in the energy market. Three factors play a key role in this: rising demand for electricity amid fluctuating energy costs, the growing supply of decentralized renewable energy, and rising costs associated with CO2 emissions.
LIVA Power Management Systems GmbH offers companies solutions for their energy transition—from analysis and consulting to product solutions. Our LIVA Hybrid Energy Storage System (Hybrid-ESS) with intelligent control enables integrated and efficient energy management within the company.
The TuWAs research project focuses on companies in the metal forming industry that currently manufacture assemblies and parts for internal combustion engines and must navigate the transition to electric mobility.
Through networking opportunities and the structured transfer of research and development results on tuwas-hub.de, TuWAs supports these companies in shaping their transformation.
The TuWAs Transformation Hub serves as the central hub for knowledge transfer and exchange within the project. This is where an industry-neutral, freely accessible platform is being created (Network Day in October 2026 in Garching, podcasts, seminars, workshops, e-learning, self-assessment, best practices, knowledge map) that supports the transformation process of powertrain companies across the entire value chain.
The Automotive Cluster East Germany (ACOD) is a network of companies, research organizations, and institutions in the automotive industry that supports the sector’s transformation toward electromobility, digitalization, and sustainable value creation.
A key project is TraWeBa (Battery Value Chain Transformation Hub). It focuses on battery technology as the key to electromobility and, in particular, supports small and medium-sized enterprises in positioning themselves along the battery value chain. To this end, technology trends are analyzed, knowledge is pooled, and exchange between industry and research is promoted.
In this way, ACOD helps to secure the industry’s long-term competitiveness and tap into new value creation potential.
