CO₂-Free Glass Production: Challenges and Solutions Along the Value Chain

As it moves toward climate neutrality, the glass industry faces a twofold challenge: In addition to decarbonizing the energy supply, attention is increasingly turning to CO₂ emissions associated with raw materials. In particular, carbonate-containing feedstocks contribute significantly to emissions along the value chain.

What options exist for making raw materials, intermediate products, and processes for glass production CO₂-free or low-carbon in the future? What technologies and research approaches are already available, and where are there still unanswered questions? The Glas 2.0 network’s online event is dedicated to these topics. Experts from the fields of glass production, raw material extraction, process engineering, and research will provide insights into current developments, innovative solutions, and future prospects for climate-neutral glass production.

The event is free of charge and is aimed at all stakeholders in the glass manufacturing value chain, from raw materials to the melting process.

The event provides an overview of current approaches to reducing and preventing CO₂ emissions throughout the glass industry’s raw material and process chain. The focus is on concepts for CO₂-free or low-CO₂ raw materials, assessments by producers, new technologies for decarbonization, and current research activities aimed at achieving climate-neutral glass production.

In addition, the event aims to foster professional exchange among stakeholders in the value chain and to identify common challenges and potential solutions.

Participants will gain insights into:

  • the glass industry’s requirements for CO₂-free raw materials,
  • current developments in raw material extraction and its decarbonization,
  • innovative technologies for electrification and CO₂ capture in upstream processes,
  • as well as challenges and opportunities along the entire value chain.

An interactive hands-on session complements the technical presentations. Together with the participants, an idealized process for CO₂-free glass production will be critically analyzed. In addition to fostering an intensive exchange among participants, the goal is to identify technical, economic, and organizational challenges and to derive starting points for future developments and collaborations.

The event is also intended to identify further potential activities in this area within the framework of the Glas 2.0 network.
