Students develop ideas for a more visible glass city Zwiesel

09.02.2026

An international team of students is developing creative ideas to make Zwiesel more visible as a glass town. The concepts are intended to strengthen the glass heritage in the cityscape and promote tourism and identity.

Glass has always been a part of the Bavarian economy and culture. It is therefore important to emphasize this in the heart of the glass regions. The Lower Bavarian town of Zwiesel, for example, shows how this can be done.

An international team of students from the Bavaria Israel Partnership Accelerator (BIPA) program has spent the past few months developing creative proposals to highlight Zwiesel more strongly as a glass town. Five students from Bavaria, Israel and the USA developed concepts to make glass in Zwiesel more visible and more tangible for visitors. Herbert Unnasch, Managing Director of Gründerwerkstatt Glas, supported the project.

One of the most important ideas was a pedestrian traffic light with a glassblowing symbol, which - similar to themed traffic lights in other cities - could highlight Zwiesel's glass heritage in everyday life.

Both Mayor Karl-Heinz Eppinger and Gründerwerkstatt Glas were open to the suggestions. The concepts are to be discussed by the town council in the near future. Implementing these proposals would be a further step towards highlighting the historical significance of glass in Bavaria and the Bavarian Forest in particular.

Further details about the project can be found here.
