The European Commission is investing €1.3 billion in AI, cloud, cybersecurity and digital skills to strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty.

The funds will flow into the "Digital Europe" (DIGITAL) program and aim to reduce Europe's dependence on non-European technology providers.

Funding priorities:

  • AI: Promoting the use of generative AI in key sectors such as healthcare, for example for the development of personalized medicine and improved diagnostics.
  • Cyber security: Strengthening the cyber resilience of critical infrastructures to protect sensitive areas such as hospitals from cyber attacks.
  • Digital skills: Improving digital skills in educational institutions to meet the demand for skilled workers in the digital economy.
  • European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH): Supporting the EDIH as a bridge between research and business to facilitate access to technical expertise, especially for SMEs.
  • Destination Earth: Promoting the initiative to develop a digital model of the Earth for climate and crisis management.
  • STEP platform: Accelerating innovation through the new "Strategic Technologies for Europe" platform, which recognizes promising projects and facilitates access to funding.

Next steps
The first calls for proposals under the DIGITAL program will be published in April 2025. Information on open calls is available on the EU Funding & Tenders portal.
