Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria 2025 in Munich - a review

08.12.2025

"Driving Innovation for the Future of Healthcare" - this was the motto under which creative and astute minds tackled the challenges facing the healthcare industry from Thursday to Saturday.

The event, which was held under the patronage of Judith Gerlach, the Bavarian Minister of State for Health, Prevention and Care, brought together around 150 participants from all over Germany and the EU. They all came together in Munich and contributed their ideas from a wide variety of fields. From IT and care to medicine, interested parties and experts came together over the St. Nicholas weekend to develop innovative solutions. The interdisciplinary teams presented their ideas in pitches and were awarded prizes by a jury.

The aim of the three-day event, which took place as part of the EDIH DigiCare project, was to rethink real challenges in the healthcare sector and find innovative solutions to them. To achieve this, nine different challenges drew the best out of the hackers to make the healthcare sector more digital and future-proof. Dr. Harald Unterweger, Deputy Head of Healthcare at Bayern Innovativ, sums it up: "The Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria is a catalyst for innovation and brings the right people together to bring about lasting change in the healthcare sector."

Nine challenges and ten exciting, innovative solutions

The challenges covered various topics from the healthcare sector. What they all had in common was that they represent real problems. In cooperation with companies, clinics, universities and start-ups, this year's focus was on prevention, innovative care, safer sex, rare diseases and sustainability, as well as support in cancer diagnosis, tools for finding solutions and clarity of patient data. All challenges were met with great interest by the participants and each one was filled with a team of creative innovative minds.

And the winner is...

On St. Nicholas Day, the best ideas were selected and awarded prizes by a top-class jury. They had the difficult task of selecting the strongest solutions from the numerous innovative approaches, but in the end these three teams came out on top:

1st place: Commit-ment Issues
The winner of the Healthcare Hackathon Munich is the Commit-ment Issues team. The solution for the Fresenius Medical Care challenge secured first place and shows how digital tools are shaping the future of tomorrow. They developed an AI-supported assistant that selects the relevant parts of a large instruction manual on demand and simultaneously displays the information in the PDF to check its validity.

2nd place: Team AMIGO
Their application for the LMU's "Advanced Medical Intelligence for Guiding Orphan Medicine" challenge in cooperation with the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital creates a European ecosystem between the seven top children's hospitals in Germany. The special feature: The development is based on clinical findings without sensitive personal data leaving the clinic.

3rd place: Team Medtelligence
For the medatixx "Seven and a Half Minutes for an Overview" challenge, a dashboard was created that provides doctors with a quick overview of relevant patient data using AI-supported filter functions. Supplemented by automated advance information, the valuable time during the consultation is used optimally.

The other teams also developed impressive solutions. Due to the high quality of the solutions, the judges' scores were very close. It is to be hoped that each team will be able to take away valuable results for the future, pursue approaches further and improve healthcare in the long term as a result.

After the hackathon is before the hackathon

According to the motto "All good things come in threes", there will be another Healthcare Hackathon in Munich in 2026, following on from the two very successful hackathons in 2024 and 2025. Make a note of November 26-28, 2026 in your calendar!
