Three municipalities in Bavarian Swabia want to produce green hydrogen themselves from 2027. Energie Schwaben is planning plants with a capacity of five MW each.
From 2027, the Energie Schwaben Group plans to produce hydrogen at three locations in Bavarian Swabia. One electrolyzer each with a capacity of 5 MW is to be built in Allmannshofen, Illertissen and either in Rohrenfels or Oberhausen an der Donau.
According to Energie Schwaben, the development of local hydrogen capacities is necessary to ensure a secure supply in the long term. The three plants will supply climate-neutral hydrogen that can be used in industry, commerce, for heating and as a fuel. The plan is for the electrolysers to convert surplus energy from renewable sources into hydrogen and thus also serve as storage.
The projects are being implemented by the subsidiary Schwaben Regenerativ, which is wholly owned by the Energie-Schwaben Group. According to the company, the investment sum per site amounts to around 8 million euros. The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs is funding each of the projects with 3.3 million euros via the Bavarian electrolyser funding program.
"By building three electrolysers in the region, we are making an important contribution to the success of the energy transition," says Steven Narrog, Managing Director of Schwaben Regenerativ. In addition to importing hydrogen, regional production will also be needed in the future, he emphasizes. Domestic production creates added value locally and strengthens the economic basis of the municipalities.
A joint survey conducted by Schwaben Netz - another subsidiary of Energie Schwaben - and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) has already shown that interest in purchasing hydrogen has already been secured. According to the survey, there is high demand from industry and commerce in the region.
Long-term independence from fossil fuels
The Energie-Schwaben Group, based in Augsburg, is a regional energy supplier that generates and markets electricity from renewable sources and biogas in addition to gas. Its portfolio also includes the operation of local and district heating networks as well as services relating to municipal heat planning and electromobility. Through its subsidiaries Schwaben Netz, Schwaben Regenerativ and Energie Schwaben Solar, the Group offers energy solutions for municipalities, the housing sector, industry, commerce and private households.
The Group's strategic focus is on decentralized supply models and the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure - also in order to become independent of fossil fuels in the long term.
