The Federal Network Agency has published a map of Germany showing the service quality of electricity distribution network operators. It is intended to highlight progress in digitalization.

On July 22, 2026, the Federal Network Agency published a map of Germany showing the service quality of electricity distribution system operators. According to the agency, the new online resource is intended to provide transparency regarding the performance of network operators and create incentives for improvements.

The map compiles key metrics on service quality and shows how far individual distribution system operators have progressed in implementing the energy transition and digitizing their grids. Among other things, users can see how long it takes a grid operator on average to establish a grid connection, which areas of grid operations have been digitized, and how many minutes end consumers in the respective grid area were affected by service interruptions on average.

According to the authority, the published metrics are intended to make the reliability and performance of distribution grids comparable. At the same time, the authority aims to present the development of grid operators in a way that is more transparent to businesses, consumers, and regulatory authorities.

“With the supply quality map, we are creating transparency regarding reliability and performance—that is, the distribution network operators’ competence in the energy transition and their level of digitization. In this way, we are creating incentives for improvements,” explained Klaus Müller, President of the Federal Network Agency.

Data is updated regularly

According to the agency, the map of Germany is based on key performance indicators collected as part of quality regulation for operators of electricity and gas distribution networks. It currently contains data for the 2024 reporting year. The Federal Network Agency plans to update the key performance indicators annually and gradually add further information to the map to highlight progress in the modernization of distribution networks.

In particular, the key performance indicators are intended to show how network operators are driving the expansion of the electricity grids and implementing digital processes in grid operations. According to the Federal Network Agency, this increased transparency is also intended to create an incentive to further improve the performance of the distribution networks.
