The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) has presented a funding guideline for so-called "hubs for fusion".
The aim is to establish central competence centers for the development of fusion energy in Germany.
Three thematic hubs are planned for laser fusion, magnetic fusion (stellarator) and fuel cycle and materials development. They are intended to network research, industry and infrastructure more closely and decisively advance technological maturity.
The initiative is part of the "Fusion 2040" program and the German government's high-tech agenda. In the long term, it aims to create the conditions for the construction of the first fusion power plant in Germany.
Both the establishment of the hubs and specific research and development projects are being funded. The focus is on new materials, fuel cycles and key technologies for the operation of future fusion reactors, among other things.
Funding is provided in the form of a non-repayable grant, whereby companies must make a financial contribution. The projects can run for up to five years. Initial project outlines must be submitted within one month of the directive being published.
With the fusion hubs, the German government aims to create an innovation ecosystem that bundles research, industry and the promotion of young talent and strengthens Germany's international competitiveness in the field of fusion energy.
