Customers who use “SpotmyEnergy” to control smart appliances at home automatically receive a discount on the fixed energy rate for every kWh consumed.

The offer sounds a bit complicated, but it can definitely be advantageous for electricity customers. The electricity provider SpotmyEnergy has announced a new rate plan that combines a fixed energy rate with a bonus for controllable electricity consumers. The plan is called the “SmartFix Heat Pump Rate,” according to the Cologne-based company.

Here’s how it works: Households continue to pay a fixed rate per kWh. However, those who own a programmable heat pump, an electric car, or a home battery storage system receive a discount on the electricity consumed by these devices. For heat pumps, this discount is 6 cents/kWh. For electric cars that are plugged in for at least eight hours, as well as controllable home batteries, a credit of 10 cents/kWh is applied, the company adds.

A prerequisite is a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) from Spotmyenergy. This system controls the devices whenever possible during times when electricity prices on the exchange are low. With heat pumps, for example, the building can be preheated when plenty of electricity from renewable sources is available. Control is automatic. “This happens entirely in the background. Customers don’t notice a thing—except for the credit on their electricity bill,” says Jochen Schwill, founder and CEO of Spotmyenergy. The company does not specify concrete prices in its announcement.

Another requirement is a smart metering system. As a competitive metering point operator, Spotmyenergy can install this itself if necessary. Registration for the new rate plan is set to begin on December 1, 2026. The service is expected to be available in early 2027.

Spotmyenergy was founded in 2023 by Jochen Schwill, a co-founder of the electricity marketer Next Kraftwerke. The company develops smart solutions for managing electricity consumption and marketing flexibility. According to a company profile, the provider employs around 80 people.
