273 MW of new storage capacity is currently being built in North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein. Kyon Energy has started the construction of three large-scale projects there.
Three large-scale battery storage facilities are now being implemented in different grid regions of Germany. Kyon Energy from Munich is behind the projects. The company develops, builds and operates large-scale battery storage systems. Together, the projects will achieve an output of around 273 MW and a storage capacity of 552 MWh.
The largest storage facility is to be built in Husum (Schleswig-Holstein). The Munich-based company is planning a facility there with an output of around 146.5 MW and a storage capacity of 296 MWh. Schleswig-Holstein is one of the federal states with a high proportion of wind energy. The storage facility will therefore primarily absorb surplus electricity and feed it back into the grid later.
In Brilon-Nehden near Meschede (North Rhine-Westphalia), Kyon Energy is building a storage facility with an output of around 103 MW and a capacity of 208 MWh.
The third project is being built in Sülzetal near Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt). The plant will have an output of around 23.7 MW and a capacity of 48 MWh. According to the company, the storage facility complements the existing project portfolio in eastern Germany.
More than 7,000 MW in the pipeline
The three projects are part of a larger project pipeline that Kyon Energy is currently developing in Germany. Managing Director Thomas Maubert explained that the current construction starts will create additional storage capacities in regions where they will be needed in the future. The company is thus continuing the expansion of its storage infrastructure.
Kyon Energy has been part of the French energy group Total Energies since the beginning of 2024. According to the Munich-based company, its project pipeline comprises more than 7,000 MW. A further 1,200 MW are currently being implemented. In addition, Kyon Energy has more than 1,500 MW of approved and ready-to-build projects. According to the company, this makes it one of the largest developers of battery storage systems on the German market.
