Start-up meets clinic: Bavaria's hospitals focus on digital solutions
Together with the Bavarian Ministry of Health, the Bavarian Hospital Association (BKG) is sending a strong signal for the future of healthcare: By signing a declaration of intent to support start-ups, creative innovations are being specifically promoted in order to relieve the burden on hospitals in Bavaria and provide even better care for patients.
Innovations in response to the pressure to reform
Demographic change, a shortage of skilled workers, bureaucracy and financial bottlenecks - the challenges facing Bavaria's hospitals are enormous. Digital technologies and innovative start-up solutions are becoming the focus of attention in order to make care fit for the future. At the 2nd Round Table of the State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention (StMGP) on March 12, 2025, promising start-ups presented themselves to the self-government partners.
"Innovations are very important to those responsible in hospitals - this was recently shown by the 16th Bavarian Hospital Trend," said Christina Leinhos, Deputy Managing Director of BKG. Particularly in demand: artificial intelligence, electronic patient files and telemedicine.
Practical applications with great potential
The range of solutions presented is impressive: digital wound documentation, a pressure ulcer alert for the early detection of pressure ulcers and modern hospital information systems (HIS) show how technology can make everyday hospital life easier. However, access to the healthcare sector is often difficult for start-ups in particular due to high regulatory hurdles.
This is why the BKG has now responded by publishing a practical guide on its website to help start-ups enter the hospital world. Topics such as IT security, standards and relevant contacts are presented in a compact and understandable way.
"Hospital meets start-up" network launches in May
BKG is also launching the new "Hospital meets start-up" network in May. The aim is to bring young companies and hospital representatives together directly. Start-ups can present their products in short pitches to receive direct feedback and find potential partners.
Bayern Innovativ Gesundheit: We bring start-ups and hospitals together
We at Bayern Innovativ Gesundheit also see this development as a key lever for the modernization of healthcare. Through our networks, events and transfer formats, we create connections between start-ups, hospitals, research and industry. We support young companies in testing their innovations in practice and integrating them into everyday healthcare. At the same time, we help hospitals to identify and implement suitable solutions.
Strong partners, clear goals
Judith Gerlach, Bavaria's Minister of Health, emphasizes: "Bavaria has strong start-ups that are advancing our healthcare system. I therefore very much welcome the fact that the Bavarian Hospital Association is specifically supporting young companies on the basis of our round table and wants to bring innovations into practice more quickly."
The initiative shows: When politicians, hospitals and start-ups work together, a fruitful climate for innovation is created. Together, we can make healthcare in Bavaria fit for the future.
