Reverion Nominated for the 2026 German Future Prize
Project "Dark Calm and Light Breeze: The Reversible Power Plant Closes the Last Gaps in the Energy Transition"
Date: September 22, 2026
The energy startup Reverion has been nominated for the 2026 German Future Prize. The award, presented by the Federal President, recognizes the development of a reversible high-temperature fuel cell power plant that can generate electricity or convert excess renewable energy into storable gas.
Storing electricity when it is in surplus and making it available again when needed: that is exactly what the fuel cell system developed by the Eresing-based company makes possible. The plant converts biogas, natural gas, or hydrogen into electricity with high efficiency. Conversely, when there is a surplus of renewable energy, it produces green hydrogen or synthetic methane, which can be stored long-term. In this way, the innovation connects the electricity and gas grids, utilizes existing infrastructure, and contributes to a more flexible, stable, and climate-friendly energy supply. A pre-production unit achieved an electrical efficiency of 74.2 percent in field operation—according to Reverion, a world record for thermal power plants. The company employs approximately 220 people; seven units are already in field operation. The award ceremony will take place on November 18, 2026, in Berlin.
