Palladio Partners and Voltfang want to build and market battery storage systems across Germany. Around 250 million euros are to be invested in this by 2029.
Palladio Partners, an investor specializing in infrastructure, and Voltfang, a battery developer and manufacturer, are entering into a binding partnership for large-scale storage projects. According to a joint statement, they are aiming for long-term cooperation for the development, financing, realization and operation of system-supporting large-scale battery storage projects. The first concrete projects from the partnership are expected to reach construction maturity this year.
250 million euros targeted by the end of 2029
"The growing demand for electricity storage combined with falling technology costs is currently making it very attractive to invest in the expansion of battery storage systems," explains Oliver Sauer, Partner at Palladio Partners. "With its sustainable offering, Voltfang fits in very well with our transformation fund and thus the interest of our investors," he says.
"The implementation of projects on this scale requires two things: scalable battery expertise and solid financing," explains Voltfang founder David Oudsandji. Palladio has access to capital and a deep understanding of the energy markets. "Voltfang completes the partnership with its technology expertise". Based on the current market conditions, around 250 million euros are to be invested in the German battery storage infrastructure over the coming years as part of the joint projects.
Voltfang from Aachen will assume responsibility for the planning, construction, operational management and maintenance of the projects as the operational partner. Palladio Partners will ensure the commercialization and financing of the projects. The capital comes from a fund managed by Palladio Partners for institutional investors - many of them from the retirement provision sector, such as insurance companies, pension funds and pension schemes - which focuses on the transformation of infrastructure in Germany.
One partner for the technology, one for the money
The joint projects between Palladio Partners and Voltfang include the use of second-use modules - a particularly sustainable solution from Voltfang. Unused battery modules originally intended for electric vehicles are tested, requalified and made usable for large storage systems for use in the power grid (grid-scale sector).
The energy storage systems should actively contribute to the stability, security and efficiency of the electricity grid. They are suitable for participation in both the balancing energy and wholesale energy markets.
According to calculations by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), around 100 million kWh of electrical storage capacity will be required nationwide by 2030 and around 180 million kWh by 2045. Currently, large storage batteries in Germany have a total capacity of just three million kWh.
