KfW Ipex-Bank is providing N-Ergie with 150 million euros for investments in electricity and district heating networks in Nuremberg and Middle Franconia.
KfW Ipex-Bank is providing N-Ergie Aktiengesellschaft with a KfW promotional loan of 150 million euros. Ipex is KfW’s international project and export financing bank, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. These funds are intended to finance investments in the electricity and district heating networks in 2026 and 2027.
According to the bank, the funds will go toward, among other things, the expansion and modernization of networks as well as new substations. The investment area covers Nuremberg and large parts of Middle Franconia. The financing takes the form of a bilateral individual financing agreement between Ipex-Bank and N-Ergie of Nuremberg.
The KfW programs 293, “Climate Protection Initiative for Businesses,” and 148, “Investment Loan for Municipal and Social Enterprises,” are being utilized. The aim is to support, in particular, investments in energy infrastructure that are necessary for the energy transition and the electrification of the energy system.
Modernization of the Power Grid
According to KfW Ipex-Bank, the investments are intended to modernize and strengthen the power grids. This is expected to create additional capacity for integrating renewable energy. The increasing electrification of heating and transportation also requires an expansion of the distribution grids. This includes, for example, infrastructure for electric mobility and heat pumps.
“We are supporting N-Ergie in expanding its electricity and district heating networks in a targeted manner to meet the requirements of the energy and heating transition,” says Velibor Marjanovic, a member of the management board at Ipex-Bank. He explains that the financing strengthens municipal infrastructure and supports a climate-friendly energy supply. N-Ergie is the municipal energy and water utility for the city of Nuremberg. Through its subsidiary, N-Ergie Netz GmbH, the company supplies large parts of Middle Franconia with electricity and gas. In Nuremberg, it also provides drinking water and district heating.
Investments Secured
According to Maik Render, spokesperson for the Executive Board, the financing is of long-term significance for N-Ergie. “Reliable, long-term financing is crucial for our investment program,” explains Render. The partnership with KfW Ipex-Bank gives the company the financial means to modernize its networks and further develop the energy supply in Nuremberg and the surrounding region.
With these investments, the participating companies are responding to rising demands on municipal energy infrastructure. In addition to the integration of additional renewable generation, heat pumps, electric vehicles, and other electrical consumers in particular are increasing the need for high-performance distribution grids. The KfW financing is intended to help secure the necessary investments at N-Ergie over the next two years.
