Germany Lays the Groundwork for CO₂ Exports
Storage Planned in Denmark and the Netherlands
October 13, 2026
Germany has signed letters of intent with Denmark and the Netherlands regarding the export of captured CO₂. The agreements are intended to accelerate the rollout of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) in Germany and to provide industry with reliable prospects for decarbonization.
As part of the first Strategic Dialogue of the Carbon Management Forum, State Secretary Frank Wetzel signed the agreements with the two neighboring countries in Berlin. In the future, captured CO₂ is to be transported, among other things, for permanent storage in suitable reservoirs abroad.
Launched in May 2026 by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the Carbon Management Forum brings together around 200 representatives from more than 120 organizations. Together, they are developing recommendations for action to establish the entire CCS/CCU value chain—from capture through transport and storage to the utilization of CO₂.
