GENESIS project: Europe launches major initiative for sustainable semiconductor production
A new pan-European consortium of 58 partners from industry, research and science has launched the GENESIS project to make semiconductor manufacturing more sustainable. The aim of the project is to develop environmentally friendly solutions along the entire semiconductor value chain.
The three-year project is being coordinated by the French research institute CEA-Leti with support from the European Commission. GENESIS is closely linked to the European Green Deal and the European Chips Act.
Strategically, the project is based on the following four pillars:
- Monitoring & Sensing - real-time monitoring of emissions
- New materials - development of environmentally friendly process chemicals
- Waste prevention - recycling and waste minimization
- Critical raw materials - reducing dependencies
The GENESIS project team plans to develop around 45 innovations in the field of sustainability, covering the entire life cycle of semiconductors. In addition, the project aims to promote not only ecological but also socio-economic aspects such as knowledge exchange and new jobs. SEMI Europe is responsible for disseminating the project results in order to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of sustainable semiconductor manufacturing technologies in industry and science.
