From a Global Technology Trend to an Opportunity for Innovation in Bavaria

Through its scouting initiative in the energy sector, Bayern Innovativ, together with partners from the foreign trade sector and business development agencies, examined international developments in key future-oriented fields of the energy industry. The goal is to identify technological trends early on, highlight Bavaria’s strengths, and uncover potential for technology transfer, collaborations, and new business opportunities.
Which energy technologies are relevant globally, and what opportunities do they present for companies and Bavaria as a hub for innovation?
For the energy sector, a total of 50 future technologies were examined across the fields of smart energy grids, storage technologies, sustainable energy generation, heating and efficiency, and CleanTech. The evaluation was based on criteria such as existing expertise and production capacities in Bavaria, international technology demand, export opportunities, transfer potential, and strategic need for action. The study involved 68 Bavarian industry and technology experts as well as ten companies from various application fields.
Three Perspectives on Future Technologies
The results of the scouting exercise paint a picture of how different international technology developments can be strategically relevant for Bavaria.
1. Export Technologies
Technologies such as digital twins for energy grids, second-life battery storage systems, AI-supported building energy management, agrivoltaics, and smart meters align with existing expertise and production capacities in Bavaria. At the same time, there is high global demand. This can create significant export opportunities for Bavarian companies.
2. Demand-Driven Technologies
Strategic gaps in expertise and value creation still exist in the areas of solid-state and sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, AI-based grid optimization, and high-temperature heat pumps for industrial applications. International collaborations and exchanges with technology leaders can help close these gaps in a targeted manner.
3. Technologies with Transfer Potential
Technologies such as the direct recycling of lithium-ion batteries, vehicle-to-grid systems, redox flow batteries, PEM electrolysis, and geothermal heat pumps already have relevant expertise in Bavaria. Their potential lies particularly in integrating them more fully into industrial value creation, scaling them up, and bringing them to market.
Technology scouting thus provides guidance in a dynamic technological field. It highlights where Bavaria is already well-positioned, in which areas there is a need for action, and which developments can be specifically translated into research, business, and industrial applications.
