The DHL Group will secure 80 million kWh of electricity per year from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm from 2026. The PPA contract with energy supplier EnBW runs for ten years.
EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and the Bonn-based DHL Group have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to cover around 16 percent of the DHL Group's current annual electricity requirements in Germany. This was announced by EnBW on June 16. The contract covers around 80 million kWh of electricity per year and has a term of ten years.
The electricity will come from EnBW's offshore wind farm "He Dreiht" (East Frisian for "He turns") in the German Bight, which is currently under construction. The installed capacity of He Dreiht will be 960 MW, of which 20 MW will be used to supply Deutsche Post. The contract between the two companies will run from the commissioning of the wind farm, which will take place in stages until spring 2026.
The Borwin Epsilon converter platform and the Borwin 5 submarine cable will connect the He Dreiht North Sea wind farm to the electricity grid. Germany's largest offshore wind farm is currently being built off the coast of Borkum in the North Sea; the first wind turbine, including a 15 MW turbine, was installed at the end of April. According to EnBW, more than half of the available electricity from He Dreiht has now been contractually secured.
The contract with EnBW from the He Dreiht wind farm "is another important step on our way to net zero emissions in logistics by 2050," said Anna Spinelli, Chief Procurement Officer at DHL Group. The logistics provider is aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.
