Distribution System Operators in Germany at a Glance

The Edna Federal Association has published an online map that displays grid operators, generation facilities, and battery storage systems based on publicly available data.
The “evu+” initiative within the “Energy Market & Communication” (Edna) Federal Association has published an online map that consolidates data on electricity grid operators in Germany as well as the generation facilities and battery storage systems connected to their grid areas. The map overview “Electricity Grid Operators in Germany” is based on public data from the Market Master Data Register and reflects the status as of April 2026, according to the association. It was created using artificial intelligence.
Users should be able to see, with a single click, how many generation facilities are connected in a grid area and what their installed capacity is. The overview includes photovoltaic, wind, biomass, hydroelectric, and geothermal plants, as well as conventional generation facilities and battery storage systems. Additionally, analyses are available by grid operator, federal state, and type of generation. The data is scheduled to be updated every six months in the future.
98,000 residents per distribution network operator
Richard Plum, Managing Director of the Edna Federal Association, views the map as a contribution to the discussion on the structure of Germany’s distribution grids. “The frequently voiced criticism that Germany has too many grid operators falls short, in our view,” he comments. The new map demonstrates “that small and medium-sized grid operators, in particular, make an indispensable contribution to the electricity supply and to security of supply.”
According to the association, of the total 871 grid operators in Germany, 237 are based in Bavaria. Baden-Württemberg follows with 121, and North Rhine-Westphalia with 114 grid operators. To put this into perspective, Edna refers to a comparison with other European countries. According to this comparison, there are approximately 98,000 residents per distribution grid operator in Germany. In Austria, this figure is about 75,000 residents per distribution network operator, and in Switzerland, about 15,000 residents. For Denmark and Finland, the association notes a comparable or higher density of network operators relative to population size.
