Digital maturity as a foundation for the future?
Digitalization is no longer an abstract future topic in the healthcare sector. In everyday life, it determines how efficiently processes run, how well informed patients are and how attractive a practice is as an employer. For small and medium-sized companies in the Bavarian healthcare sector in particular, from medical practices and medical care centers to specialized service providers, a central question arises: Where do we actually stand digitally?
This is precisely where the Health Care BY Your Side project comes in, which is being implemented on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention. The aim is to provide service providers with a structured, realistic and practical view of their level of digital maturity. And without sales interests, without additional bureaucracy and without risk to sensitive data.
Between aspiration and everyday life: digitalization in Bavarian practices
Many practices in Bavaria have already introduced digital solutions in recent years. Online appointment bookings, electronic documentation and digital communication with patients are no longer the exception. At the same time, everyday life shows that digitalization often takes place selectively. Individual tools are introduced without being embedded in an overarching strategy.
The result is often a juxtaposition of digital and analog processes, which costs time and burdens employees. This is precisely where the question of digital maturity becomes relevant. Not in the sense of a ranking, but as a guide:
- What is already working well?
- Where are there gaps?
- And what next steps are realistic?
A model that reflects practical reality
The basis for the maturity assessment is a scientifically sound model that was developed by the KVWL together with the University of Witten/Herdecke and is now being used in Bavaria in cooperation with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Bavaria. The model looks at digitalization not only in technical terms, but also in organizational and procedural terms.
Among other things, it covers
- Digital infrastructure
- Internal processes
- Communication structures and competencies within the team
The aim is not an ideal picture, but a realistic inventory that fits the respective practice size and structure. Participation in the maturity assessment as part of Health Care BY Your Side is free of charge and low-threshold for practices. After completing the survey, participants not only receive an overview of their results, but also access to further support services. This includes personal evaluation meetings, manufacturer-neutral advice on the selection of digital solutions as well as further education and training. The offer is supplemented by professional information and practical materials that are specially tailored to the needs of practices.
Another component is the community of practice "Fit for digitalization in medical practices", in which participants can exchange ideas, learn from each other and share experiences. Especially for smaller units without their own IT or digitalization department, this peer-to-peer exchange is a key added value.
Trust through data protection and pseudonymization
The handling of data is a sensitive issue in digital surveys in the healthcare sector. The project deliberately focuses on transparency and security here. Participation is pseudonymized. It is not possible to draw conclusions about individual practices. Only the project partners can view inquiries; the KVB only receives pseudonymized profiles. This creates a framework in which openness is possible. This is a key prerequisite for an honest assessment.
Digitalization as a strategic topic for SMEs
For small and medium-sized companies in the healthcare sector, digitalization is no longer just about efficiency. Digital processes influence patient satisfaction, internal collaboration and the future viability of their own services. At the same time, there is often a lack of time in everyday life to systematically address the topic. This is precisely where the Health Care BY Your Side project comes in to make digitalization tangible: it picks up practices where they are and offers guidance instead of overwhelming them. The maturity level assessment is not an end in itself, but the start of a structured development process.
It is no coincidence that the project is being implemented in Bavaria and involves regional networks. Digital transformation in the healthcare sector only works if it takes regional care structures into account. Short distances, personal contacts and practical formats play a decisive role here.
Bayern Innovativ and Medical Valley are contributing their experience from innovation and transfer projects and building a bridge between strategy, practice and implementation.
Conclusion: Knowing where you stand in order to make meaningful progress
Digitalization is not a target state, but a process. It is crucial for practices and other SMEs in the healthcare sector to consciously shape this process. The first step is often the most difficult: an honest assessment. The maturity assessment as part of Health Care BY Your Side offers a structured, safe and practical approach to precisely this. Not as an external assessment, but as a tool for your own strategic development.
